In some developed countries, people with intellectual disabilities, such as autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome are enrolled in supported employment programmes that offer them the opportunity to work. Now China is catching up.

A video of people venting their anger towards two Penang Island City Council (MBPP) officers went viral on social media today.

The five-minute, 12-second video showed a silver Toyota Vios with its front right wheel clamped. The car is believed to have been parked at a spot for the disabled at Jalan Macalister.

A one-legged footballer has captured the hearts of millions of Chinese fans after a widely circulated video showed him holding his own against able-bodied opponents and scoring a rasping right-footed drive.

The exploits of 21-year-old He Yiyi, who lost his leg to childhood cancer and uses crutches to support himself when playing, have earned him several endearing nicknames including “Angel with Broken Wings”, “Ball King with One Leg” and “Magic Boy”.

2,000 show support for the disabled

CLAD in neon green T-shirts, more than 2,000 people gathered at the 24th Annual Charity Walk/Jog/Wheel-A-Thon to promote awareness of disabilities. It was organised by The Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCAS & FT) Malaysia with the support of about 30 welfare-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
