SHELTERED WORKSHOPS

People with disabilities (PWD) may not be readily accepted in open employment due to an employer’s perceived lack of confidence in their abilities. This may be due to a number of environmental factors.

Objective

Sheltered workshops are a way to provide jobs that are challenging and meaningful, assist in natural socialization amongst peers, and provide a framework of dignity and self-respect for PWD. They are based on the conviction that PWD deserve to work in an environment filled with compatible peers and to have the opportunity to pursue a successful career.

Types of Work Offered

Sheltered workshops often employ PWD in a variety of subcontracting work, such as packaging, mailing and sorting services for local companies, and assembly line production of food and crafts. The majority of sheltered workshops in Malaysia are specifically catered towards helping people with learning disabilities find meaningful work.

Hours and Remuneration

Employees of sheltered workshops work a certain number of hours per week (as determined by the management) and are paid wages corresponding to their ability.

Carers’ Peace of Mind

For parents and guardians of children with disabilities, sheltered workshops are an important way to reintegrate their child or charge into society. This affords their personal safety and mental well-being while allowing them to be a productive member of society.
