Plans are afoot to make the deaf and mute Indonesian boy, hailed a hero for helping save the lives of a group of Malaysians during the recent Lombok earthquake, an adopted child of Malaysia.

People with disabilities are being left behind, and steps must be taken to ensure their inclusion in the world of education and work. Approximately 15 percent of the world’s population, or an estimated one billion people, live with disabilities. But neglect, discrimination, and abuse are still all too common among disabled youth, leaving them deprived of rights including those to education, health, and employment.

In Malaysia, we still have a long way to go from looking at the child’s disability to looking at him or her personally and his or her abilities. In this respect, we are behind much of the developed and developing world. Re-symbolising our nation is one step in the right direction. I appeal to media outlets, corporate bodies, shopping complexes, government agencies and all relevant bodies to consider adopting this new symbol when we need to use a disability sign.

Taufik, the deaf and mute Lombok hero, is set to end years of suffering after a Malaysian ear specialist offered to treat the disabled Indonesian.
