A cancer survivor was determined to walk on stage to receive her graduation scroll in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday – even if she had to do it on crutches and with a splint cast on her leg.

So when Rohany Gabi slowly took to the stage at the 19th Universiti Sabah Malaysia (UMS) convocation, the auditorium, filled with her fellow graduates and academicians, burst into applause and cheers.

Having been paralysed from the waist down since he was six months old made Richard Rieser empathetic to the concerns of the disabled community. Diagnosed with severe visual impairment when he was 11 years old, Pung Kay Suan’s world seemed to have darkened ahead of him. Despite their disability, two visually impaired students are confident of scoring straight As in the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) examination. Aidit Iskandar Samsir and Muhammad Sukrey Mohd Zin were among the four special needs (CBK) students who sat for the PT3 in Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar (MSAB) here.
