Sejak sekian lama remaja kurang upaya, Anis Humairah Riduwan, hanya membesar di Kuala Kangsar, Perak dan berulang alik ke Sungai Petani, Kedah kerana bersekolah Pendidikan Khas di sana. Anis Humairah, 18, tidak pernah terfikir suatu hari nanti beliau bakal keluar meninggalkan negara ini untuk ke Moscow, Russia, iaitu tempat yang begitu asing baginya.

Like many teenagers, Ella Warren-Roberts, 14, is very creative. She makes slate jewellery, she does woodcutting, and paints in watercolours. “She always has more than one project on the go,” says her proud mother, Glenda Roberts. “And she always completes them.” “So I don’t get too stressed out on one thing, I can relax by doing another,” says Ella. This lively, cheerful teenager also really likes science but, until recently, she wasn’t able to shine at it.

“Teaching yoga, hosting yoga brunch events and doing a full-time finance contract is pretty tiring,” says Jemma Ralston, “but it is so exciting because I am in control. All these things I am choosing to do. Yoga is my passion.” Ralston has a condition called Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) that leads to problems with blood clotting, causing easy bruising and prolonged bleeding. It also involves nystagmus – uncontrolled eye movements, leading to reduced vision and depth perception.

Mutakhir ini istilah B40 atau kumpulan isi rumah berpendapatan 40 peratus terendah semakin berkumandang, lebih-lebih lagi apabila kerap disebut Menteri Pendidikan. Keprihatinan Menteri Pendidikan terhadap pelajar dalam kalangan B40 – sekolah, institusi pengajian tinggi (IPT) dan senasib dengannya – perlu disambut serius terutama warga pendidik.
