Wheelchair Charity Run May 1

Penampang: Gen-Y Penampang and JCI Penampang have again joined force to organise the Wheelchair Charity Run 2018 to raise awareness about people with all kinds of disability and the challenges they face on a daily basis.The groups will be organising the event on May 1 after having successfully done it last year where they attracted 567 participants, including 150 individuals with disabilities.

According to the project's organising chairman Beecher Mc Alister, they aim to get 2,500 people to participate this year and twice the number of those with disabilities.

Speaking during a press conference Wednesday, Beecher said the run will start at Riverson Walk with the flag off scheduled at 6am.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation cum Upko President Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau is expected to flag off the participants.

"The purpose of the run is to educate and create awareness that this event will go to our special needs programme where we will identify people with walking disability and provide them with wheelchairs," he said.

Also present was Penampang Barisan Nasional Chairman cum Upko Secretary-General Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin, who acknowledged the meaningful contribution made by the groups to people who suffer from physical and mental disabilities.

He expressed pride in seeing more young people taking up leading roles in making long-lasting contributions to their community and society in general.

Building up to the event in May, a Wheelchair Charity Run anniversary dinner on Feb 3 at Putera Ballroom in Bukit Padang.

The dinner is meant to thank the run's previous and current sponsors and partners for their generous support.

Guests at the dinner will automatically be a run participant as race packs will be included in the dinner package.
