For graduates with disabilities, the situation is even more challenging. With an uncertain business climate, many organisations and companies prefer to employ graduates who they think can hit the ground running from day one. For them, graduates with disabilities may not match their expectations.

All public higher education institutions (IPTAs) must become completely disabled-friendly within the next decade, says Dr Maszlee Malik.

The Education Minister said this was part of the guidelines for the OKU (Disabled) Inclusion in Higher Education Institutions Policy that was implemented in January.

The Social Security Organisation (Socso) has played a pivotal role in getting workers with disabilities employed, sometimes in the same job. From January 2007 to July 31 this year, 25, 891 workers with disabilities went through Socso’s Return to Work (RTW) programme and reported for duty.

Lee Tur Chung (pic) of SM Pendidikan Khas Vokasional obtained a one-year scholarship under the Fulbright Foreign Student Programme to pursue a PhD in deaf education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
