TOM:Alberta, a subsidiary of Kadima Dynamics, just concluded their third annual makeathon event. Local engineers and designers worked with people living with disabilities to create open-source solutions for everyday challenges.

THE National Deaf-Blind Equipment Distribution Program’s ICanConnect is providing free technology to people with hearing and vision loss so they can reconnect to the world.

The range of aids and technology now available to help students with a disability learn and boost their self-esteem has flourished, and is making a difference in schools in New Zealand.

With the support of the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Disability Network Partners recently sponsored — for the very first time — a seating and wheeled mobility services training workshop. OVR Executive Director Arlene Yamagata, M.S., CRC shared that training included a combination of lecture, hands-on experience, client demonstrations, case examples, and opportunities for group discussion.

Kavita Krishnaswamy had labored through a decade of coursework in math and computer sciences to achieve a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. She’d spent three years narrowing the focus of her doctoral dissertation. But when the day arrived to defend her dissertation proposal before the panel of senior academics who would allow her to proceed, she never showed up. She sent her robot.

The Brooklyn based inclusive-design organization launched in 2014, initially as a public service project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the three years since, the group has developed around 60 unique garments for people with disabilities ranging from spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, and Lou Gehrig’s disease as well as “invisible” disabilities like autism.
