The Education Ministry will implement the Zero Reject Policy in stages next year to ensure special needs students (MBK) and undocumented children have access to education. To all outward appearances, Nur Fatin Shahsazizan is a strong, independent young woman determined to forge her own path in life.

But Fatin, who has been hearing-impaired since birth, acknowledges that this is difficult in a world which more often than not caters to “normal people”.

It was a dream come true for paraplegic Nurul Fathiah Jamaluddin, 30, to participate in an open water scuba diving course in the waters surrounding Pulau Bidong, Terengganu.

“While my movements are somewhat restricted on the ground, I am able to overcome my fears and move freely in water which is an exhilarating experience,” said the native from Banting, Selangor.

The Welfare Department will consider parents’ requests to create autism sub-categories in the Disabled People’s (OKU) card to enable them to access more specific services. Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh said it was one of the ministry’s efforts to safeguard the welfare of autistic children and to create awareness about autism among the people.
